Operation Backpack 2010 – Ends August 15

Operation Backpack is a collaborative school supply drive program run by the YMCA of Greater Houston and educational and faith-based community partners. Your assistance provides students with the academic tools they need to succeed. You can help by purchasing some items and putting them in the collection bins located in Foyer. The bins will be at the Chapel until August 15. Holy Cross has been a regular supporter of Operation Backpack thanks to your generosity!

This year Operation Backpack hopes to collect 40,000 backpacks! And the items collected at Holy Cross will be designated for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, in appreciation to the Companions of the Cross (Frs. Michael Scheerey and Carlos Martins) for their generous help at Holy Cross Chapel.

A list of supplies which may guide you in your donation is in the narthex. In addition, the principal of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel has mentioned that the teachers use post-it notes or post-it flags. Financial donations are also welcome. Thank you for your generosity!

Café Catholica

Café Catholica is a young adult (ages 18-30's) dinner lecture series featuring some of the most dynamic speakers in our Archdiocese. The Cafe is held over four consecutive Monday evenings each summer at St. Vincent de Paul church in the West U area (6800 Buffalo Speedway at Bellaire, 77025). We begin with mass at 6:15pm (come if you can)...food is served at 7:00pm...and the speaker starts at 7:30pm. If you can only make it for part of the evening, please join us whenever you can. Come worship, eat, learn, get challenged, and meet other great young Catholic adults from around the Houston area!  We have 250-300 young adults join us each evening - and many more than that on evenings when the Cardinal speaks. There are tables displaying various Catholic ministries and organizations and companies from around town and nationally. Following is the schedule of speakers.

Billboard News

Our billboard is up and it looks terrific! People have been commenting on how good it looks. There is a picture of it at the Security Desk. If you would like to see it in person, take the I-10 East exit to Downtown. Just as you approach the underpass before Smith Street, look up and there it is! If you would like to contribute towards its expense, please see Carol or Fr. Michael. Thank you!

Finances

The daily collection total for July 12-16, 2010 was $754.50. Thank you for your generosity.

Flower Donations

If you would like to make a donation to the Chapel for flowers in honor or memory of a loved one, please see Carol. The names will be listed in the bulletin. Thank you.

The flowers in the Chapel this week are in memory of Marjorie E. Garcia, mother of Mike Garcia.

About Indulgences

There are three general types of grants:

A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while performing their duties and enduring the difficulties of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.

This type of grant intends to assist the Christian faithful in fulfilling the command of Christ: You need to pray always and not stop. Lk 18:1 It also admonishes them to carry out their duties in such a away that they maintain and increase their union with Christ.

II. A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, prompted by a spirit of faith, devote themselves or their goods in compassionate service to their brothers and sisters in need.

This second type of grant intends to induce the Christian faithful to follow the example and the command of Christ Jesus (Jn 13:15 and Acts 10:38) by frequently performing works of charity and mercy. But this indulgence is not attached to all works of charity. It is attached only to those works done “in compassionate service to their brothers and sisters in need,” e.g. persons who are need of food or clothing for the body or in need of instruction or comfort for their spirits.

III. A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, in a spirit of penitence, voluntarily abstain from something which is licit for and pleasing to them.

This third type of grant intends to urge the Christian faithful to hold their appetites in check and thus learn to obtain mastery over their bodies and conform themselves to the poor and suffering Christ.

Daily Homilies

Fr. Michael records his daily homilies. These audio files are uploaded to the website in .mp3 format and are available for download on the Daily Homilies page. Each file is generally 5-10 minutes in length and uses 2-3MB of space on your computer or portable .mp3 player. What a great convenience and benefit to us all! Enjoy!
